Coronaviruses were first found in the 1960s. The exact origin of this virus is not known. The name of the virus given with the reference to its crown-like shape. A Coronavirus can infect both animals and humans.

Everyone gets a coronavirus infection at least once in life. They are more common in the fall and winter. This virus is a kind of common virus that induces infection in the nose, sinuses, or upper throat. Most coronaviruses are not threatening.

But In early 2020, the outbreak in China, WHO has identified a new type, a novel coronavirus. It causes upper respiratory infection symptoms such as a stuffy nose, cough, and sore throat. It can be treated with rest and medications. This virus can also cause middle ear infections in children.

How This Infection transmitted?
This virus usually spread from an infected person to other people via air by coughing and sneezing from an infected person, close personal contact, like touching or shaking hands, touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching mouth, nose, or eyes before washing hands.

Who is at risk for coronavirus infections?
This infection can occur in any person. But young children are at high risk to get infected.

Common Symptoms of Coronavirus
The symptoms of Coronavirus are similar to other upper respiratory infections, such as the runny nose, coughing, sore throat, and a fever. It is a little difficult to differentiate between a coronavirus or a cold-causing virus, like rhinovirus.

If the infection spreads to the lower respiratory tract like windpipe or lungs, it can cause pneumonia, in older people, people with heart disease, or people with weakened immune systems.

What Can Be Done?
Vaccination is not available for coronavirus. Preventive measures for a Coronavirus infection, are the same as to avoid common cold:

Wash hands thoroughly with soap or warm water or with hand sanitizer.
Keep hands and fingers away from eyes, nose, and mouth.
Avoid contact with infected people.

It can be treated the same way a cold is treated:
Get plenty of rest.
Drink fluids.
Take medicines for a sore throat and fever.
A humidifier or steamy shower can also help ease a sore and scratchy throat.
